Brighton Marathon 2010 – a long distance runner!

The first Brighton marathon is due to take place on Sunday, 18 April 2010.  I am taking part in it and it will be a first for me.  Like Tony Bloom, the Albion chairman, I am running it for Rockinghorse, a charity that specialises in providing support for children’s medical services throughout the South East.  One of our partners, Paula Archer, is a trustee of Rockinghorse and our former partner, Chris Bidwell, has been a trustee of Rockinghorse for many years.

I started training properly for the marathon just after Christmas.  One of the best things about training is the diet.  Just to make you jealous, this involves taking on extra carbohydrates at every opportunity at all times, even when not actually running that day – cake, porridge, energy bars, bananas, cake, biscuits, potatoes and cake. Did I mention cake?

The hardest thing is training during the winter and getting used to running first thing in the morning, as the marathon will start at 9.00 a.m.  This means getting up at 6.00 a.m. and eating constantly for an hour or so to sustain the body for the hours of running later on.  It is fantastic to run along the seafront when the weather is good, but more often than not there is a biting wind going in one or other direction.  Fortunately, technology has improved quite a lot since I last did any serious exercise and there are all sorts of wind and rain-proof clothing to wear to protect you from the elements. These consist of a lot of skin-tight, elasticated, synthetic base-layers – “You mean Lycra?” - No, actually, nothing like Lycra in any way, at all.

Woolley Bevis Diplock LLP is sponsoring Rockinghorse's after-race party at the Queen’s Hotel on the seafront.  Look out for our banners on the day.  The idea will be for runners and their friends and families to gather at the Queen’s Hotel and watch the end of the race.  There will be food, drink and massages on-hand for the runners.  If anyone would like to lend a hand on the day please let me know.

I have received a fantastic amount of sponsorship from friends, clients, colleagues, contacts, and even people that I do not know very well.  When I mention the name Rockinghorse people reach into their pockets automatically and make a donation.  Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far.  If you haven’t made a donation and would like to, the link to my fundraising website is here: www.bmycharity.com/andrewholtmarathon.  I would be grateful for any amount, however small.

Best wishes,

Andrew Holt, managing partner
